NERVE-GROWTH-FACTOR (NGF)
Russian researchers have discovered that the level of autoantibodies to nerve growth factor (NGF) was elevated in blood serum children with autism, as well as those with other forms of mental impairment and that a correlation was found between the level of autoantibodies to NGF and the degree of disease progression (Kozlovskaia et al, 2000; Bashina et al, 1997).
Nerve-growth-transcription factors (NGF) are regulated by thyroid hormone (Calza, 1997;Mellstrom et al, 1994).
In rats, pituitary NGF is selectively modulated by thyroid status of the animal, further supporting a close link. Investigators found an increase of NGF-IR in the pituitary gland and testis of hypothyroid rats whereas no differences were found in the adrenal gland and blood. Also, NGF mRNA expression had increased in the anterior pituitary of hypothyroid rats whereas it had not changed after adrenalectomy and gonadectomy. between NGF and thyroid hormone (Calza, 1997).
